THE MORNING TEXT OPENED
Why does anyone believe? If every heart is turned away from God, why is any heart turned back? The Bible’s answer is election: before the foundation of the world, God chose a people for Himself — not because of anything good in them, foreseen or otherwise, but according to His own sovereign mercy (Eph. 1:4).
Our first instinct is to protest: “That is not fair!” But Paul answers, “Did you say fair?” If God dealt with us in strict fairness, every sinner would be condemned. Fairness would empty heaven. Salvation does not run on the rails of justice earned but of mercy given — and mercy, by its very nature, is free. God spoke these words to Moses just after Israel had worshiped the golden calf, when the whole nation stood guilty. That He should choose to save any was pure grace.
Notice where this doctrine places the weight of your salvation: “not on human will or exertion, but on God.” That is exactly where a weak believer needs it to rest. If your salvation began in God’s eternal choice, it does not tremble with your changing moods. You did not climb into His hands; He reached down and took you. And no one can snatch you out.
FOR THE DAY AHEAD
Election is not a puzzle to solve but a pillow to rest on and a fire to humble you. You cannot peer into God’s secret decree — but you can look to Christ, and everyone who trusts in Him may know that he was loved before the world began. So let this doctrine do its proper work today: kill your boasting, quiet your anxiety, and warm your worship. When you meet someone hard to love, remember that God set His love on you when there was nothing lovely in you.
A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Father of mercy, thank You. I did not choose You first; You chose me. Before I had done anything good or bad, before the mountains were formed, You set Your love upon me in Christ. Thank You that my salvation rests not on my weak will but on Your unchanging purpose. Receive the gratitude of a debtor who can never repay, and let my life today be a song of thanks to the praise of Your glorious grace. Amen.
