Kept to the End

Doctrines of Grace Series

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

— Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

THE MORNING TEXT OPENED

Every honest Christian sometimes asks the frightening question: “Will I make it to the end?” We know our own hearts — the cooling zeal, the repeated sins, the seasons when prayer feels like lifting stones. Scripture does call us to persevere; only “the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matt. 10:22). But where does the strength to endure come from?

Paul’s answer is not, “I am sure of you.” It is, “I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.” God finishes what He starts. The Father who chose you will not un-choose you; the Son who bought you will not lose you — “no one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28); the Spirit who raised you to life will not abandon the work half-built. Our perseverance rests on His preservation.

This is why the believer looks for assurance not by endless digging inside himself, but by looking outward and upward — to the promises of God and the cross of Christ. Yes, examine yourself; but do not live with your eyes on your own pulse. A craftsman does not throw away the work of his hands when he finds a rough edge; he keeps sanding, shaping, finishing. You are His workmanship, and He is not finished with you.

FOR THE DAY AHEAD

When you fall today — and in some measure you will — do not let the fall write the story. Ask instead: what is my faithful God teaching me here? Where is He humbling me, exposing my self-reliance, preparing me? Then get up and walk on, for the certainty of arriving belongs not to your grip on Him but to His grip on you. Live this day as what you are: chosen by the Father, purchased by the Son, sealed by the Spirit, and certain to be brought home.

A PRAYER OF LAMENT

O Lord, how long must I fight the same sins and carry the same weakness? I am tired of my wandering heart, and I grieve that my love is so small when Yours is so great. Yet I will not despair, for my hope was never in myself. You began this work, and You have promised to complete it. Hold me when my grip fails. Turn my mourning into steadfastness, and bring me safely — stumbling but kept — to the day of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Salvation belongs to the LORD. — Jonah 2:9
