The God Who Reigns

Doctrines of Grace Series

“In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.”

— Isaiah 6:1 (ESV)

THE MORNING TEXT OPENED

Isaiah’s world had just lost its king. Uzziah had reigned for more than fifty years — longer than most people in Judah could remember. Now he was dead, the nation was mourning, and the future looked uncertain. Isaiah went to the temple, perhaps looking for comfort. What he found was a throne that had never been empty.

The earthly king was gone, but the true King was seated — not pacing, not anxious, but enthroned, “high and lifted up.” The train of His robe filled the whole temple, leaving no room for a rival. Around Him the seraphim covered their faces and cried, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isa. 6:3). The foundations shook at the sound.

This vision changed Isaiah forever. Sovereignty stopped being an idea and became a Person. From that day, he could face a hard calling, a hostile king, and a crumbling nation, because he had seen who truly rules. God governs everything — every event, every ruler, every morning — according to the counsel of His own will (Eph. 1:11). Nothing in your day today falls outside His reign.

When our own “King Uzziah” dies — when the thing we leaned on is taken away — God opens our eyes to the throne that stands forever. The crisis is real, but the throne is not shaken.

FOR THE DAY AHEAD

Name the thing that feels most uncertain in your life this morning — a decision, a person, a fear about the future. Now place it deliberately beneath the throne of Isaiah 6. Before you check the news or your phone, let this be the first fact of your day: the Lord is seated, and His robe fills the temple. Serve Him today the way the seraphim do — with awe, with humility, and with readiness to go when He says go.

A PRAYER OF ADORATION

Holy, holy, holy Lord, I worship You. Kings rise and fall, plans succeed and fail, but Your throne stands from everlasting to everlasting. You are high and lifted up, and the whole earth is full of Your glory — including the small corner of it where I will live this day. I bow before You now, before I bow to any task or fear. Reign over me today. Here am I; send me. Amen.
