The Truth About Ourselves

Doctrines of Grace Series

“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

— Romans 3:10–12 (ESV)

THE MORNING TEXT OPENED

Before the gospel tells us good news, it tells us the truth. Paul gathers the Old Testament’s testimony into one dark portrait: no one righteous, no one understanding, no one seeking God. He is not saying that people never do kind things, or that human beings are worthless — we bear the image of God, and every soul is precious. He is saying something deeper: sin has reached every part of us. Mind, will, affections, speech — nothing is untouched.

This is why sinners do not simply need advice; we need rescue. A sick man can call a doctor, but a dead man cannot call anyone. Scripture says we were “dead in our trespasses” (Eph. 2:5) — unable, on our own, to love God or to move one step toward Him. Our wills are real, but they are bound; left to ourselves, we freely and consistently choose everything except God.

Strangely, this hard doctrine is the doorway to joy. Only the person who knows the depth of the pit can measure the height of the cross. Isaiah cried “Woe is me!” before he ever cried “Here am I!” The tax collector who would not lift his eyes, but beat his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13), went home justified. Grace becomes amazing only when we stop pretending we deserve it.

FOR THE DAY AHEAD

Today, refuse two lies. The first lie says, “I am good enough; God should be pleased with my record.” The second says, “I am too far gone; God could never receive me.” Both lies keep your eyes on yourself. The truth of total depravity kills pride and despair at once, because it sends you wholly outside yourself — to Christ. When you fail today, do not be shocked, and do not hide. Go straight to the mercy seat, quickly and honestly.

A PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful Father, I confess that the verdict of Your Word is true of me. My heart has turned aside; my thoughts, my words, and my desires bear the marks of sin. I have not sought You as You deserve; I have loved lesser things. I bring You no merit of my own this morning — only my need. God, be merciful to me, a sinner, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Cleanse me, and let my unclean lips praise You today. Amen.
